International Bitterness Units (IBU): A unit of measurement used to indicate the hop bitterness in finished beer (the higher the IBU, the more bitter the beer).
Whether you’re a hop-head or a malt maniac, an IBU measurement can be a helpful tool when seeking out new beers to try. The IBU of any given style can vary widely – whether you’re talking about stouts, Belgians, or even IPAs. While the perceived bitterness can be influenced by malt and how well-balanced the beer is, IBUs can be a good guide for how aggressively hoppy you can expect a beer to be.
